European Investment Bank financing will support upgrades to distribution infrastructure, protection systems and network automation.
The European Investment Bank and Neoenergia have signed a €150 million financing agreement to modernize Neoenergia Elektro’s distribution networks in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
The October 22 EIB announcement identifies a broader investment programme costing approximately €342 million, to be implemented from 2027 through 2030. Spain’s export credit agency Cesce is guaranteeing the EIB loan.
The programme covers distribution lines, substations, protection and control systems, additional network automation and measures to reduce technical losses. EIB says it is intended to strengthen reliability, capacity and climate resilience while facilitating new customer and renewable-generation connections.
Why it matters for the grid
Distribution modernization involves the electrical network and the systems used to monitor, protect and operate it. Automation can support fault detection, selective isolation and restoration, but delivered benefits depend on installed equipment and subsequent performance.
What comes next
The financing agreement is a development milestone, not evidence that upgrades are complete. Implementation during 2027–2030 and measured service-quality outcomes will determine how the programme translates into operational benefits.
