Pakistan’s energy minister said transformer-level monitoring systems are being deployed nationwide to detect electricity theft and support targeted enforcement, according to an October 19 government statement.
The Press Information Department reported Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari’s remarks during a visit to the DG Khan Airport expansion project. Radio Pakistan also reported the transformer-monitoring initiative that day.
The government says the system is intended to identify particular transformers in high-theft areas, allowing more selective enforcement rather than affecting paying customers across an entire feeder. These are stated objectives; the announcements do not quantify completed installations or demonstrated reductions in losses.
The engineering issue to follow is whether transformer-level information gives operators sufficient visibility to localize problems and support more selective decisions. Monitoring deployment should not be treated as proof that automated transformer-level disconnection is already operating nationwide.
Further evidence is needed on participating distribution companies, technical specifications, implementation coverage and measured results. Those details would help distinguish an announced modernization programme from a verified improvement in distribution performance.
