The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has announced financing support for a major solar and battery energy-storage project in Minya, Egypt.
The project includes 1.2 GW of solar photovoltaic generation and 600 MWh of battery storage.
The financing package includes EBRD-arranged support of up to $265 million and an aggregate debt package of up to $566 million.
The development reflects increasing interest in combining renewable generation with storage to improve the timing and flexibility of electricity supply.
Solar generation typically peaks during daylight hours, while electricity demand may remain elevated after sunset.
Battery storage can shift some generated energy into later periods, although its actual system contribution depends on the battery’s power rating, energy capacity, operating strategy and grid-connection conditions.
The financing announcement does not establish that the project has been commissioned.
Engineering significance
The project offers an opportunity to examine how storage duration and dispatch capability influence the operational value of large solar developments.
