The U.S. Department of Energy announced on October 20 approximately $967 million in additional funding through the Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grant programme.

The programme supports investments intended to improve electricity-system reliability and resilience.

Eligible activities can include improvements to infrastructure exposed to extreme weather, equipment vulnerabilities and other reliability threats, subject to programme requirements.

The funding announcement does not mean that all supported infrastructure projects have been selected, completed or placed in service.

For utilities and regulators, the important next question is how the funding will be allocated and what measurable reliability improvements the projects will deliver.

Engineering significance

Grid-resilience investment is most valuable when projects address identifiable system vulnerabilities and produce measurable improvements in service continuity or recovery capability.
